Chambord

Château de Chambord

A castle classified as worldly heritage since 1981

This is the most famous and majestic castle in the Loire Valley. Chambord lies at the heart of the largest national parkland including a huge national nature reserve. The castle architecture is outstanding: "The Great Staircase" (Le Grand Escalier). An unusual and magical double spiral-shaped staircase which puzzles visitors. It was very likely designed by Leonardo da Vinci.

"Warning": should you decide to meet a friend of yours, who is already upstairs, by using the "Great Staircase", you might be disappointed if your friend decides to go downstairs at the same time. In that case, you will not be able to meet each other.
Historically, Chambord also offers an array of riches: in October 1670, the play "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" of Jean Baptiste Poquelin alias "Molière" was first performed here for King Louis XIV.
